I think I figured out a way to do what HitWise does using upstream and downstream traffic with ComScore MyMetrix. I’m thinking of downloading the entire Source/Loss reports for Google Search, Yahoo Search and Microsoft/Live Search (large files) and then use it as a way to estimate the real search engine traffic, based on panel data, to most sites that are tracked by ComScore.
To be fair, it was not very hard to get Google/Yahoo/Microsoft search traffic out of ComScore - it has that information, you just have to drill down to get to the information.
To do this for a large number of sites - you’d get the Source / Loss report for each search engine, focusing on the traffic leaving the search engine and then searching on the property your interested in.
